Great Granny Twist Blog Hop

Welcome to the Great Granny Twist blog hop by the Fat Quarter Shop and Lori Holt. My "twisted great granny" (Ha!) ornament block uses two patterns from Lori Holt's book, Great Granny Squared.
ggg20151213_09
I made three great granny blocks (directions on page 4 Lori's book). I followed all of the directions, except I only assembled three (instead of four) Fabric L rectangles to the great granny strip unit. There will be no Fabric L rectangle on the top. Continue to trim the block per Lori's directions. In my version, however, the top is missing. See image below.
ggg20151213_02
Second, to make an ornament block, you will need to add triangles to the corners. Reference the image above. Set the great granny block on point. Cut one 7-7/8" square. Cut this square on the diagonal to make two triangles. Attach each triangle to the top right and left corners of the ornament block. Cut another square, 9-3/8". Cut this square on the diagonal to make two additional triangles. Attach each triangle to the bottom right and left corners of the ornament block. The base of the ornament will measure 16" by 17-1/2".
ggg20151213_01
The ornament base is finished, and next it is time to make the bow. Directions for making the bow are found on page 10 of Lori's book. Cut the pieces as shown in the picture above. You will need to make the following modifications: cut six of Fabric F and cut only six of Fabric H.
ggg20151213_03
On Fabric S, add a piece of ribbon so that the ornament dangles from the bow. I used a thin strip of fusible web to attach the ribbon to the fabric. Some hand-stitching here would also look nice if you prefer that. Follow Lori's bow directions.
ggg20151213_04
Add a 3-1/2" square to each end of the bow. The bow will measure 3-1/2" by 17-1/2".
ggg20151213_08
Finally, assemble the ornament base to the bow. If you are making one ornament, then add a 2" strip across the top. The finished ornament block will measure 17-1/2" by 20". If you are making a table runner like me, then assemble the ornaments. Add a 2" strip across the top of the three ornaments. The finished table runner will measure 20" by 51".
ggg20151213_06
I used 25th and Pine by Moda jelly roll for this project. You will also need 3/4 yard of background fabric for the table runner. I used Kona Cotton in Snow.
ggg20151213_07
I love the Christmas spray quilting pattern I found. It matches perfectly. I also used Isacord thread in linen.

Sundance Dresden Pillow Blog Hop

Welcome to the Sundance Dresden Pillow Blog Hop.  The lovely ladies at the Fat Quarter Shop are always thinking of the cutest quilty things!
ggg20151119_01
This adorable pillow (or wall hanging) uses the Creative Grids 18 Degree Dresden Plate Ruler, and it’s so much fun to make.  I had no idea dresden blocks were so easy.  I love how this pattern showcases two prints for each dresden blade.
ggg20151119_02
I used Tiger Lily by Heather Ross for Windham Fabrics.  A layer cake was all that was needed for the dresden block.  I also picked up some extra yardage for the binding.  I love this fabric line!
ggg20151119_03
Just look at those frolicking and dancing girls and adorable forest creatures.  Perfect for my house!
ggg20151119_04
My favorite dresden petal is the swinging girl.  Reminds me of my little gingers.  I combined ruler work, computerized quilting, and free motion quilting for this wall hanging.  I love how it turned out!
ggg20151119_05
This pillow pattern is a low-cost PDF pattern (link below) from Fat Quarter Shop, and it is so worth it!  You will also need this dresden plate ruler.    Kimberly made a great video (link below) explaining how to use this wonderful ruler.

Cozy Cottage Calendar Celebration

Are you recovering from your Halloween weekend sugar coma? Well, I have some extra sweetness for you today...
ggg20151101_05
Our dear friend, Lori Holt of Bee in my Bonnet, has recently launched her first ever calendar, called the 2016 Cozy Cottage Calendar, featuring her beautiful cottage in Utah. This twelve month calendar includes Lori's pattern for a house block in two sizes, plus a mini quilt and pillow.
ggg20151101_02
I dove headfirst into my low volume fabric stash for this cozy little cottage. When I finished the block, I knew I had to bind the pillow with the left-over heart fabric. Too sugary sweet.
ggg20151101_03
This delicious celebration continues all week! Check out more Cozy Cottage Calendar creations at the Fat Quarter Shop blog.

Creative Maker Supply Case For My Budding Artist

This last week I made a Creative Maker Supply Case for my 7 year-old budding artist, Ginger #1. She was head over heals excited for this case, especially since I included a brand-new-set-of-markers! I know that feeling...it happens to me every time I get a brand-new-stack-of-fat-quarters.
ggg20150918_01
I was in a good mood because I included one of my beloved frixion pens. Ginger #1 has no idea that this shows how much I love her!
ggg20150918_02
This case is very sturdy. It uses flex foam interfacing and extra-heavy interfacing. The result is a very sturdy case, perfect for car trips. I have no idea when we are actually going to take a car trip.
ggg20150918_03
I added the ginger's name with my digital cutter. It's a flocked heat-transfer material that works perfectly on fabrics. I've used the digital cutter and this material for labels on the back of quilts.
ggg20150918_04
Let's look at the inside again...
I wanna be a kid again. OK, no I don't, but I will make one of these cases for myself and revert to my childish ways.
ggg20150918_05
Now I gotta make one for Ginger #2 and myself. I'll be busy this next week.

Hope Blooms Log Cabin Quilt Blog Hop

Hello there. I am so happy you are here for the Fat Quarter Shop Classic & Vintage video series. This particular hop is called Hope Blooms Log Cabin Quilt. The purpose for the Classic & Vintage series is to take classic, traditional blocks and make it fresh for today. Sounds great, huh? The pattern is free, and there is even a video
ggg20150830_06
I decided to raid my Art Gallery fabric collection for this. I went for an aqua and gold color combination.
ggg20150830_04
The block goes together easy-peasy, and it was way more fun to make than the traditional log cabin block. I love the modern wonkiness of this version. BTW, the pattern calls for using the Creative Grids Log Cabin Trim Tool...I'm sure that works well, but I didn't need the ruler for this pattern.
ggg20150830_05
Confession: I don't do dusting. Sometimes, but rarely. Table runners often keep me from noticing the accumulating dust. I can never have too many table runners for this reason. Can you? Three blocks plus some essex linen sashing equals DONE.
ggg20150830_03
Cat photo BOMB! Do you see her in the window. I am disturbing her quiet time. Also, don't look at the cat hair fur ball on the corner table! Remember, I rarely dust. A table runner will cover that!
ggg20150830_02
I quilted this with an edge-to-edge feather design in gold Isacord thread. I'm so glad I went with the bird fabric for the binding. I love the extra bit of whimsy.

Flourish Quilt - MQG Challenge Finish

Whew! It is not easy to finish a quilt in summer, but I did it. This is my first time participating in the Modern Quilt Guild Challenge.
ggg20150730_08
I decided to call this the Flourish Quilt. The fabric, Riley Blake The Cottage Garden, fits this quilt name too. When I received the fabric from MQG, I knew I wanted to design a quilt that looked like it was in bloom. I also used Riley Blake Basic Shades in Sundrop and Nighttime.
ggg20150730_04
This was my first time using the Quick Curve Ruler by Sew Kind of Wonderful. This ruler made very quick work of piecing all those orange peel blocks.
ggg20150730_03
This quilt was also the first time that I did ruler work in my quilting. I used the Sidekick Ruler which matches perfectly to the Quick Curve Ruler. I also used six different thread colors! I've never done that before, and that sure adds a lot of extra work.
ggg20150730_05
I love how the back turned out. I chose a gray minky dot for the backing. I knew the texture from the quilting would be amazing.
ggg20150730_07
I finally remembered to add a tag before binding! I've had these tags for over a year!

Fabric: Riley Blake The Cottage Garden, Riley Blake Basic Shades in Sundrop and Nighttime
Thread: Isacord in Gold, Aquamarine, Delft, Whale, Fog, and Linen
Size: 27-1/2 x 39-1/2

Summer break is almost over for the gingers, and I will soon get back into my quilting and blogging routine. In the meantime, I'm enjoying sleeping in, reading, and all the craziness with my ginger girls.

Panda-Monium Free Mini Quilt Pattern

Isn't this panda the sweetest thing? I think so! The ladies at the Fat Quarter Shop created her as part of their Sew Solid video series for their YouTube channel.
ggg20150618_02
The Sew Solid series will focus on modern novelty blocks that you can turn into mini projects, or make several of the blocks for a big quilt. The latest Sew Solid quilt is this adorable Panda block...She was fun and so simple to make.
ggg20150618_03
Ginger #1 instantly declared that this panda belongs to her, and I agreed wholeheartedly.
ggg20150618_01
I decided to make her into a pillow for Ginger #1. A panda needs to be full and portly, in my opinion. I had a lot of fun quilting her on my new fusion...
ggg20150618_04
Eek! I've been pinching myself for almost two weeks now. I had been searching used longarm ads for awhile (longarmuniversity.com). A Handi Quilter Fusion with all the right features and a pro-stitcher finally appeared. It was located 15 minutes away from me! It was meant to be because I picked it up the day after my birthday. Best birthday present EVER!!! (even if this is strictly for my longarm business)

Come join the panda party! You can find the free pattern here, the video here, and the Panda-Monium quilt kit can be found here.
