Blogger's Quilt Festival : Shattered Plus

It's that time again: Blogger's Quilt Festival! I'm entering my Shattered Plus Quilt into the ROYGBIV category.
ggg20150205_01
My Shattered Plus quilt contains 121 quarter square triangles in 20 different shades of Kona Cotton and arranged in a plus pattern! The finished quilt measures 67" square. The backing, which I regret that I did not take a picture of, is white pin dot on black. Nothing fancy, and I have had the polk-a-dot fabric in my stash for a long time. The binding, however, is fancy. I used the left-over fabric from the QSTs to make the binding just as colorful as the quilt top.
ggg20150205_03
I used Hobbs Heirloom Premium 80/20 Cotton Blend Batting for the first time on this quilt. I figured a loftier batting would make the quilting pop more, and it sure did. I also used gold Isacord thread for the all-over free motion swirls.

And since I never feel like adding labels to my quilts, I have decided that I should just quilt my signature into the quilt. :)

Blogger's Quilt Festival : Gypsy Wife

It's that time again: Blogger's Quilt Festival! I'm entering my latest finish, Gypsy Wife, into the modern category.
ggg20150511_02
The quilt is approved by Ginger #1! I am really proud of this quilt. It has been a work in progress for well over a year.
ggg20150511_04
I custom quilted my gypsy wife quilt with Isacord thread in gold. The strips are quilted with an all-over, free motion tree design.
ggg20150511_05
Each block is quilted with loops, squiggles, swirls, and lines. It took a full week to quilt!
ggg20150511_06
I left some areas unquilted so that they would pop and give the quilt more depth.
ggg20150511_07
I used wool batting. So the unquilted areas really pop nicely.
ggg20150511_09
For the binding, I used Art Gallery Squared Elements in Merlot.
ggg20150511_11
For the backing, I used Windham Wideback Text in black. To me, it was made just for the gypsy wife quilt...perfect match.
ggg20150511_12
One more full shot...LOVE! The finished size is 59" x 68".

Home For Christmas Medallion For Blogger's Quilt Festival

I am so excited to share my Home For Christmas Medallion quilt for the Blogger's Quilt Festival.  This quilt will be entered into the Original Design quilt category.  Thank you so much to Amy at Amy's Creative Side for hosting this wonderful event!
ggg20141023_04
The center star of the medallion is three concentric stars. This is surrounded by presents with colorful bows. The next border is peppermints. Christmas trees and corner ornaments surround the peppermints. A candy cane border surrounds all those Christmas trees. Finally, a border of bright suburban houses finishes the quilt with corner friendship stars.
ggg20141023_02
I free-motion-quilted the quilt with an all-over swirl design. I love the texture from the dense quilting. It washed up all crinkly and beautiful.
ggg20141023_01
The binding echoes the candy cane border. SWEET!

Sand Drift For Blogger's Quilt Festival

I am so excited to share my Sand Drift quilt for the Blogger's Quilt Festival.  This quilt will be entered into the large quilt category.  Thank you so much to Amy at Amy's Creative Side for hosting this wonderful event!
ggg20141023_07
The Sand Drift quilt is inspired by Native American style. The colors are warm and natural. I used Arizona (April Rhodes) fabric line by Art Gallery Fabrics. When I saw this line, I knew I needed to design a quilt pattern for it.
ggg20141023_08
I quilted the quilt with an all-over water pattern. I used gold color Isacord thread, and the texture is amazing!
ggg20141023_06
Sand Drift Quilt Stats:
Quilt size: 82" x 82"
Fabrics used: Arizona Canyon Wall, Arizona Triangle Token, Kona Cottons in Peach, Ochre, and Nightfall.

Blogger's Quilt Festival

Have you heard? It's time for the Blogger's Quilt Festival! I'm entering a very special (to me) quilt, a memory quilt using my Dad's work shirts. He passed away in August of 2012. I made two other memory quilts before this one, one for my Grandma and another for my brother. This one went to my Mom.

ggg20130913_06_a

I spent a year trying to decide what to do with the blue shirts. I remember my Dad wearing them. I decided to go with a white and blue scheme. A star pattern seemed most appropriate. Most memory quilts are scrappy, but I don't believe they have to be. I wanted this memory quilt to bring out the light and love that my Dad emanated throughout his life.

ggg20130913_08_a

When I saw the Star Surround pattern by Melissa Correy at Happy Quilting, I had an "aha!" moment. This was a perfect pattern for the memory quilt. I used four polyester shirts in various shades of blue, and Kona Cotton in navy and white. When finished, the quilt measured 60x60. I free motion quilted the lap quilt in an allover meander with Isacord thread in white, simple to keep the focus on the stars. The quilt backing is in Kona white, and the binding is in Kona navy. This is my third quilt that I made, and I'm really pleased with it. I will be entering this quilt in the Blogger's Quilt Festival :: Two Color Quilts category.

I was helping my daughter, Ginger #1, with a Kindergarten project for Dia de Los Muertos. She chose to celebrate Grandpa, and I couldn't have been more pleased. Last night we were writing about Grandpa's favorite things. I love how the mexicans, and other cultures too, literally CELEBRATE the dead this time of year. I really like to think of this memory quilt as a celebration of his life on Earth. He was the best! We were so blessed to have him.
